How to Keep Your Computer Healthy and Quick with Ten Tips and Tricks

With these ten valuable tips and tricks, you can keep your computer healthy, quick, and you dramatically improve the lifespan of your system. It does take a lot of time to complete them, but it’s definitely worth doing it. These tips are applicable to both desktops and laptops, and can make a huge difference in your computing experience.

The average lifespan of a computer is about four years; which isn’t much. The main reasons for the short lifespan are the accumulation of dust inside the computer case, but also software issues. With these ten tips you will be able to keep your computer healthy and fast. It might take some time, so be patient.

Clean up your desktop

It may sound strange, but cleaning up your desktop definitely helps speeding up your computer. You will not only gain in quickness, you will also avoid a lot of frustrations.

Remove dust from the computer case

The arch nemesis of computer components is dust. It can make your computer, hotter, louder and slower. Modern computer cases have installed dust-filters, but most systems on the market do not have this luxury. Remove the side-panel from your case, and use a vacuum cleaner on its lowest setting, or a can filled with compressed air to remove the dust.

Use Soluto

Soluto is a piece of software that lets you monitor and change the boot times of your pc. You can check which programs can be easily removed from the boot process. It can save you up to a couple of minutes every time you boot your computer.

It is possible to upgrade some of the components in your pc. It does not necessarily have to cost much money; even a couple of bucks can make the overall smoothness of your pc a lot better. The best investment to do is buying a Solid State Drive, which radically speeds up your system.

Install CCleaner

CCleaner is a small application that cleans up all the mess on your pc. Temporary files, trash can, browser cache… Use this program regularly, at least once a week.

Defragment your hard drive

Defragmenting a hard drive can do wonders sometimes. (Note: this tip is not applicable to a Solid State Drive) You can defragment the hard drive(s) easily in Windows with the Disk Defragmenter utility. Macs don't have a pre-installed defragmentation utility. Instead, Mac-users will need to buy third-party software.

Remove unused programs

There are always programs that you do need anymore, but a lot of people actually forget to remove the program. The easiest way to do this is via Windows à Control Panel à Uninstall a program.

Update the BIOS of your motherboard

Having stability issues? Updating your BIOS (also known as the UEFI) can help. An update improves the overall performance and stability of your system.

Remove all viruses

Of course, run your anti-virus program occasionally. However, most anti-viruses will not remove all infections on your system. With the help of MBAM, you can remove the rest and speed up your pc.

Update your operating system

The majority of computer systems run on a Windows operating system. Frequently, Windows updates are released. It is important that you always download the latest updates immediately. Also, make sure you have the latest Service Pack for your pc. A Service Pack is basically a huge collection of updates with vital bug fixes and new features. You can download the latest Service Pack for your system on the Microsoft website.
