The speed and performance of microprocessors increase with the release of new processor. Besides this, every microprocessor has its own limitation. To keep the system up-to-date and to remove the limitations of the microprocessor, we must upgrade the microprocessor. To upgrade a microprocessor, we replace the microprocessor in the system with a new and better microprocessor which is compatible with the existing motherboard. If the microprocessor is not compatible with the motherboard, both the microprocessor and the board will have to be replaced.

To replace the microprocessor on the ZIF socket:

• Check if the new microprocessor is compatible with the motherboard.

• Unplug the system from the main power supply.

• Unplug all the cables of devices, such as the keyboard, mouse, and monitor connected to the system.

• Wearing an anti-static wristband is highly advisable.

• Open the cabinet using a screwdriver.

• Unplug the power cable connected to the cooling fan over the microprocessor, if any.

• Unscrew the microprocessor fan.

• Remove key locks from the fan.

• Remove the fan covering the microprocessor.

• Lift the lever besides the microprocessor. This loosens the microprocessor from the slot.

• Remove the processor keeping in mind that the pins are not bent or damaged.

• Remove the microprocessor from the anti-static bag by holding the microprocessor the edges.

• Check that all the pins on the underside of the microprocessor are straight.

• Align the notch on the microprocessor with the alignment notch on the motherboard.

• Gently place the microprocessor in the socket.

• Press the microprocessor firmly in the socket keeping in mind that the pins are n damaged.

• Push the lever back down such that it is parallel to the motherboard and locked in place Take care not to break the lever while pushing the lever.

• Connect the microprocessor fan over the microprocessor.

• Connect the power supply cable to the microprocessor fan.

• Modify the required jumper settings if any as per the motherboard and microprocessor manual.

• Close the cabinet.

• Connect the cables to the system devices such as the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

The LIF socket does not have a lever to dislodge the microprocessor chip. You have to use a little force to remove the microprocessor from the motherboard socket. To remove the microprocessor from the socket, you need to use a tool such as the chip puller. You can also use a screwdriver to loosen the microprocessor from the socket. The microprocessor must be loosened carefully such that the microprocessor or the socket is not damaged.
